HYPETV Review
Okay, so you guys, I just got out of Predator Badlands and my brain is still buzzing! Dan Trachtenberg, you brilliant madman, you did it again! After Prey, I was already a fan, but this? This is a whole new level of Predator awesome. I went in with high hopes, and honestly, they were totally surpassed.
First off, the premise alone is a chef's kiss. A young Predator, outcast from his clan, teams up with a damaged android? Stop it, I'm already hooked! This isn't just another hunt; it's an adventure, a buddy road trip from hell, but with way more plasma cannons. The narrative structure here is fantastic. It’s an origin story for a Predator, which is something we haven’t really delved into this deeply before. It gives us a fresh perspective on a classic monster, peeling back layers we didn't even know were there.
And the cast! Elle Fanning as the android? Genius casting. She brings such a nuanced vulnerability to what could have been a very one-note character. Her chemistry with Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, who, let's be real, plays the Predator through motion capture and voice work, is surprisingly effective. You actually root for this mismatched duo. The Duffer brothers being in the cast is a fun little easter egg too, though I'm not sure if they're playing themselves or some random scientists.
Now, let's talk about the action. It's relentless, it's brutal, and it's beautifully shot. Trachtenberg has a knack for making these fights feel visceral and real, even with all the sci-fi elements. The 107-minute runtime flies by because you're constantly on the edge of your seat. My only minor quibble, and it's a small one, is that sometimes the pacing, especially in the middle act, felt like it was trying to do a little too much world-building while also maintaining the high-octane action. A few moments could have breathed a bit more, letting the emotional beats land with a bit more weight. But honestly, that’s me nitpicking because I loved it so much.
Overall, Predator Badlands is a fantastic addition to the franchise. It's smart, it's thrilling, and it dares to do something different. It takes the core essence of what makes Predator great and expands upon it in exciting new ways. If you're a fan of sci-fi action, or just a good adventure story, you absolutely have to see this. It’s a solid 7.8 for me, and honestly, I’m already ready for a rewatch!
